Carrier Oils and Aromatherapy:
Carrier oils are base oils used to dilute essential oils in blends for topical applications. They prevent potential irritation as essential oils are potent and should not applied directly to the skin.
Carrier oils should be cold-pressed and 100 percent pure. Different carrier oils exhibit distinct characteristics that should be taken into consideration when blending, including scent, absorption, and skin type that the oil is being applied to.
Types of Carrier Oils:
There are many types of carrier oils and each one offers different therapeutic properties. Some popular carrier oils are as follows:
Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima) – A thick oil made from avocado fruit and high in oleic acid. It has a mild, nutty aroma and prevents dry, damaged skin.
Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) – Hydrating with a strong coconut aroma, Coconut oil does not clog pores and is beneficial for dry, itchy skin.
Grape Seed Oil (Vitis vinifera) – High in vitamin E, Grape seed oil comes from grapes, is easily absorbed, and helps to reduce wrinkles.
Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis) – Made from pressing the bean from the jojoba bush, Jojoba is similar to the skin’s natural oils, is moisturizing, and does not go rancid.
Hemp Seed Oil (Cannabis sativa) – A rich source of protein and fatty acids with a nutty aroma, Hemp seed oil helps to reduce inflammation and has anti-aging properties, moderates the production of oil, assists with acne, and promotes healthy hair.
