Aromatherapy and the Ages

Both aromatherapy and astrology have been practiced for centuries, but are they connected in any way?

Although the practice of combining aromatherapy and astrology seems fairly new, it is an established concept.  Ancient healers were aware of the influence that the cycles of the heavens had on both plants and people.  In the 17th Century, Herbalist Nicholas Culpeper had assigned a ruling planet to medicinal herbs, and merged astrology with herbal medicine.

Astrology Tidbits:

Astrology is the study of the alignment of the stars and planets, and their influence on the world and human affairs.  In addition to astrology offering guidance on personality traits and personal forecasts, there are twelve astrological ages that parallel with major changes in the development of humankind, society, and culture.

An astrological age lasts for approximately 2,160 years.  Although the method of calculation varies, many astrologers believe that we are currently transitioning into the Age of Aquarius and leaving the Age of Pisces, with the transition period lasting approximately 200 years. 

What it Signifies:

Aquarius is the last air sign of the zodiac, with its symbol being the water bearer.  Thales of Miletus, one of the seven sages of Ancient Greece and commonly known as the first scientific philosopher in Western history, considered the origin of the world to be the nature of water.  Essential for life, civilization is built on the existence of water.  The Aquarian seeks to cleanse, illuminate, and give life, by offering water to the earth in an act of service.

The Age of Aquarius represents freedom, purification of the inner self, expanded consciousness, and connecting to the planet and humanity.  Freedom, harmony, democracy, and philanthropy are all associated with the Age of Aquarius.

Through the sense of smell, aromatherapy helps in focusing, healing, and channeling energy effectively.  Essential oils also assist with influencing feelings, memory, and behaviors, by stimulating areas of the limbic system.
