Perks of Peppermint

What’s to Love:

There are so many reasons to love Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil. It could be inspired by its sweet, minty, and fresh aroma, its ability to relieve stress, or that it provides an energy boost when you’re feeling lethargic. Considered one of the most versatile oils in the world, there are numerous applications for Peppermint including cosmetic, culinary, health, and aromatherapy.

With origins in France, Australia, and India, Peppermint is also one of the few essential oil plants grown and distilled in the United States.

Some History:

Peppermint was used by Ancient Egyptians for digestion and as a ritual perfume. In 1879, Peppermint’s menthol compound was noted in the British Medical Journal for relieving headaches, leading to the popularity of scented candles and menthol cones. 

In Greek mythology, Peppermint is mentioned in the story of the nymph “Minthe”, who is transformed by Persephone, the wife of Hades, into the herb that would release a powerful, sweet aroma whenever stepped on.

The Perks:

Peppermint has many uses including reducing inflammation and relieving sore muscles, clearing infections, reducing fatigue, and stimulating creativity. Peppermint is also cooling, and is very effective in relieving nausea and headaches.
